Ultimate Conversation Starter Guide

Ultimate Conversation Starter Guide

Here are some excellent questions to get a conversation started. There are a lot of random discussion starters, followed by conversation questions organized by theme to get you started. Start with the open-ended questions or look for a topic that interests you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to getting started; scroll down and get started!

These questions can be used in a variety of ways. The most satisfying method, in my opinion, is for everyone to open up this list of conversation starters on their phone or tablet and then take turns choosing a question to ask the group. Remember, don’t be scared to research the topic further. The purpose is to have an entertaining conversation, not to answer the precise topic.

Conversation Starters for Any Situation

Let’s get started with these great conversation starters. These are ideal for striking up a conversation with someone new or who you haven’t seen in a while. They’re also significantly more fascinating than the conventional “Where are you from?” and “What do you do?” questions, which are both extremely boring. Instead, try these.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

This is an excellent one since it encourages the other person to share something with you. They can inform you about their job if they wish to. They are free to tell you about their children. It’s also a terrific approach to find out what’s on someone’s mind.

Have you been working on anything exciting recently?

This is my response to the question, “What do you do?” When you ask if someone is working on anything exciting, the other person is more likely to talk about anything positive in their life rather than just give you a boring update.

So, what’s your backstory?

This is a fun conversation opener since it invites someone to tell you a tale about themselves, and you never know what kind of amazing story they’ll tell you.

What are you working on right now as a personal passion project?

This is a personal favorite of mine. You never know what a person’s secret side hustle is. I like to ask this question to someone I’ve met in one setting, such as at work, but would like to learn more about them personally.

What is your relationship with the host?

This one may be tailored to any occasion. If you’re at a party, chances are you’ll recognize the host. You can change it to “How long have you been a member of this organization?” if you’re at a networking or professional event.

What was the most memorable part of your day today?

This is a fun alternative to asking, “How are you?” because it generates more intriguing responses.

What was your week’s high point?

Instead of asking, “How are you?” or “How’s it going?” this is a nice question to ask. It encourages people to share a positive narrative rather than merely responding with “Fine” or “Good.”

Have you ever attended a similar event?

This one may be customized for a variety of occasions, including birthday parties (did you attend last year?) and networking events (do you attend every month?).

So far, what has been the high point and low point of your day?

If you have a talker, this is an excellent option. If you’re conversing with an extrovert, asking them things to ponder and expand on can pique their interest. This is a question that extroverts adore.

Has this been a particularly hectic period for you?

I don’t always like to enquire about people’s schedules, but I do so when they appear to be distracted or uninterested. Acknowledging their busyness can sometimes be enough to draw them in.

How’s that cocktail, food, artwork, or game coming along?

Asking about what someone is carrying or doing is one of my favorite context clues. Inquire about their wine selection. Ask if they enjoy the piece of art they’re looking at. Ask about the quality of the food. These are simple-to-use openers.

Are you having a good time?

Looking for someone who is alone themselves yet appears to be having a good time is a great way to start a cold approach. It’s simple to seat next to someone at a table or stand next to someone at the bar and enquire, “Are you having fun?” or “Are you having fun?” It’s a nicer start than simply asking, “How are you?”

Keep the Conversation Going

That concludes my list of twelve killer openers. Why not get a little more personal? My following set of topic starters will assist you in continuing the discussion.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Have you ever encountered an awkward pause in a conversation? This is a great approach to start a conversation. If it’s a Monday or Tuesday, you can change it to “Did you have any fun over the weekend?” “What’s your favorite weekend activity?” I’ll ask occasionally.

What are some of your favorite eateries in the area?

Almost every time I ask for personal recommendations, I get a negative response. They’re a terrific way to start a conversation. Why? I always get fantastic advice! You can also discuss where someone comes from if they don’t have an answer because they are new to the city. Win-win!

Have you been following sports, television shows, or news lately?

If you keep up with the news or sports, you could ask your partner if they do, too. If that’s the case, you and I share a lot of interests. If it isn’t the case, you can inform them!

Can you suggest any special cocktails, snacks, or desserts try while you’re here?

Asking what to order or take from the buffet is another fantastic approach to acquire recommendations. You can go get some meal together if they haven’t eaten yet.

Everything looks delicious… I’m undecided on what to get! What are your thoughts?

What else have you tried? Asking for advice on what to get is a form of asking for a recommendation. Even at networking gatherings, you can ask for recommendations at the bar.

What a lovely/cool/ugly/bizarre location. Have you visited this location before?

Context is something you’ll always have, no matter where you are. There is always something unusual to comment on and ask about whether you are at a house, a restaurant, or a ballroom.

Have you seen the YouTube video that went viral?

Today, it was all over my social media. Bring up a fantastic video you recently viewed. You can all laugh together if they’ve watched it. You can show them if they haven’t already!

I’m going to make a coffee/get a drink, does anyone else want one?

This one is great since you can use it to address a large group–perhaps your new team on your first day at a new job, or a group of people you’re sitting with at a conference for a presentation. This is a fantastic method to see how well you get along with the folks you meet on your coffee run and to start a conversation with them.

Take Your Conversation to a Deeper Level

Let’s imagine you’ve been talking to someone for a while, or it’s a friend you’ve seen previously and you’re looking for anything new to chat about. These are some of my thought-provoking conversation starters.

Direct your conversation to more deeper topics. If you aren’t genuine, the most of your talks will be superficial. It’s nice to chat about more important aspects of our existence. True, some of those conversation starters are a little out there, but if the conversation is going well, I encourage you to give them a shot. You never know what you’re going to learn!

Who would you choose if you were to choose a character from a book, movie, or TV programme? Why?

This is useful if someone has recently mentioned an actor, a book, or a film. Hearing which character a person most resembles reveals a lot about them.

What did you want to do when you were a kid?

Is any of that still correct? This is one of my favorite questions to ask after someone has stated anything about their childhood or growing up. It also allows you to discuss whether their present employment resembles their original dream.

What is your greatest apprehension?

This one is a bit of a slog, but it’s so good! It always generates a lot of interest.

What is your greatest remorse?

Talking about regrets can be a great way to learn more about someone and their past. If you truly want to get to know someone, only ask this!

Who do you look up to as a role model?

You might be able to question an inspiring person, a boss, an author, or even a celebrity about their role model if you’re talking about them. This is also a fantastic approach to discuss who inspires you!

Conversation Starters for a First Date

The finest dating conversation starters are those that allow you to learn more about each other’s personalities and lives.

Do you have any personal passion projects that you’re working on?

This is my go-to question, and it inevitably arises when someone mentions how busy they are/what they do for a living/if they have any interests.
It can lead to a great, wide conversation about their hobbies and how they spend their time. It’s a million times better than “What are your interests?”

What is the best gift you’ve ever given? Have you ever been given?

You can discuss presents if it’s near the holidays or one of your birthdays. This is also an excellent option if the restaurant you’re eating at is celebrating a birthday!

What does a normal day for you entail?

“What do you do?” is not a good question to ask. Rather, enquire about their average day. This inquiry will elicit significantly more detailed responses and reveal far more about a person than simply asking, “What do you do?” You can learn if they are an early riser, how they use their free time, and, in most cases, their occupation. I’ve discovered that you don’t need to ask about their job; it typically comes out spontaneously.

Is there anything you refuse to consume?

If you’re ordering meals, this one comes up very frequently. It can generate some simple conversation and supply you with some interesting tidbits.

What types of holidays do you enjoy taking?

“Have you taken any holidays recently?” people frequently enquire. Someone can, however, respond quickly—and they may not have gone anywhere (which results in awkward silence). Instead, enquire about the types of vacations they enjoy. This leads to a lot of interesting dialogue and a lot of “get to know you” responses. Bringing up the subject of travel can even lead to a second date! Professor Richard Wiseman performed research and discovered that 18% of couples who talked about travel went on a second date, but only 9% of couples who talked about movies went on a second date.

What did you imagine your life would be like when you were a kid?

A Trojan Horse is the perfect conversation starter for a first date–something light and whimsical–and it’s also a wonderful excuse for you to share your goals with your date and start a talk about your childhoods, education, or interests.

Which of your relatives do you resemble the most?

Do they have a special relationship with their mother, father, or great aunt? This question offers you a sense of their familial situation while also allowing them to briefly define themselves. They might compare themselves to their godfather because they enjoy reading, or to their brother because they have a crass sense of humor. Their interactions with important people in their lives are likely to provide you with some insight into how they might interact with you.

Is there anything unexpected that happened today?

“How was your day?” isn’t enough. Instead, enquire about something unexpected that happened during their day. You could also enquire about their high and low points. You’ll get fewer canned responses like “fine” or “quite decent” if you do this.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I usually ask this question whenever someone gives me advice. It’s a beautiful transition that raises some interesting points.

Tell me about your closest companions.

If they bring up a friend or a tale about a friend, use this. This is an excellent follow-up question for learning more about who they spend their time with.

What were you like when you were a kid?

“Are you close to your family?” some people enquire. However, for a first date, this can be a touch personal, and most people will respond with a prefabricated response. Instead, enquire about their childhood experiences and allow them to tell you about themselves and their family.

Bonus: If you’re familiar with Birth Order personality types (which I highly recommend), you may enquire about their siblings and discuss their birth order—do they suit the normal personality types for their birth order?

Have you recently visited any good restaurants?

This is a simple segue question to find out about their dining habits if you’re eating out and discussing the quality of the food/menu/atmosphere.

You discover a remote control that allows you to rewind, fast forwards, halt, and start time. What are your plans for it?

Yes, I am aware that there was a mediocre film made on this. But it’s still a fascinating scenario.

Who would you call if you could have a one-hour discussion with anyone in the world?

You may learn something from them by asking questions, or you could try to persuade them to do or not do anything, or you could simply try to make friends with them.

Where do you hide to survive the “a-pup-calypse” when the globe is filled with rabid dogs with the intelligence of a 5-year-old?

I’m not sure whether this has been turned into a corny horror film, but it should be.

In front of you, a portal to another planet opens. You have no idea how long it will be open or if you will be allowed to return once you’ve gone through it. So, what exactly do you do?

You have no idea whether what’s on the other side is good or evil, but you’ll have to make a decision immediately.
